Decent Housing: A Pathway to Thriving Communities in Nairobi’s Informal Settlements
The Housing Crisis in Nairobi’s Informal Settlements
Nairobi’s Korogocho settlement is home to over 200,000 people living in extreme poverty. Families reside in overcrowded spaces with inadequate access to clean water, sanitation, and electricity. The lack of decent housing perpetuates a cycle of poverty, health challenges, and social instability.
CHG Kenya’s Role
Commonwealth Housing Group Kenya is addressing these challenges by providing sustainable housing solutions. Partnering with MWAMKO, CHG Kenya focuses on empowering communities to take charge of their future through secure and stable homes.
Benefits of Decent Housing
- Improved Health: Proper housing reduces exposure to diseases and promotes mental well-being.
- Economic Empowerment: Stable homes enable families to focus on income-generating activities.
- Educational Opportunities: Children in secure homes have better access to education.
- Community Development: Decent housing fosters unity and social growth.
Current Projects
CHG’s pilot project in Kamulu aims to rehouse 25 families from Korogocho. With 12 units completed, CHG is halfway to achieving this goal. Each unit represents a step toward breaking the cycle of poverty.
