Korogocho is one of the most densely populated informal settlements in Kenya. It has a population of approximately 200,000 people living on a 1.5 square kilometer piece of land and located next to Dandora dumpsite which is Nairobi’s largest garbage dumping site.
Korogocho families live in deplorable conditions of extreme poverty. Their housing units are characterized by lack of proper water supply, sanitation, and solid waste management. Lack of access to electricity and a poor
infrastructure further compounds the problem.
Healthy homes promote good physical and mental health for both children and adults. Good health depends on having homes that are safe and free from physical hazards.
In contrast, poor quality and inadequate housing as witnessed in Korogocho
contributes to health problems such as chronic diseases and injuries, and has been noted to have harmful effects on childhood development
While we cannot wave a magic wand and have decent homes for all the 200,000 people living in the Korogocho informal settlement right away, we believe gradual progress is possible. CHG has joined hands with MWAMKO (a Korogocho-based group) to roll out the pilot project that will provide decent homes to 25 families (comprising 180 people) living in Korogocho.
We have already purchased a 2 acre piece of land strategically located in Kamulu, Kasarani Sub – county on the outskirts of Nairobi city. Here we have constructed 12 housing units and reached a halfway milestone of the project. We now appeal for help to construct 13 more housing units to settle the 13 additional families currently living in Korogocho.

Over the years, Mwamko Project has made significant strides to improve the lives of families in need. Here are some key highlights of our impact:
We relocated 12 of 25 families to a safe site in Kamulu, Nairobi, with 8 units occupied since early 2023 and 4 more ready by October 2024, moving us closer to our 25-unit goal.
With support from partners, we’ve provided piped water, a water tower, and a septic system, enhancing health and sanitation.
